Nicholas Oak in Frombork

General Information

The pedunculate oak named Nicholas is one of the most well-known natural monuments in Frombork.

Location

The Nicholas Oak is located in the courtyard of Cathedral Hill.

Object

In the courtyard of the cathedral complex there grows an impressive pedunculate oak bearing the name “Nicholas.” According to the findings of Cezary Pacyniak, author of the study "The Oldest Trees in Poland", its age is estimated at approximately 500 years, although the information board placed next to the tree gives a higher value—by nearly one hundred years. The trunk of the oak, whose circumference measures 706 cm, is hollowed out to a significant extent almost along its entire height. In order to preserve the stability of the tree and prevent it from toppling over, special protective measures have been applied—the interior of the trunk has been reinforced with metal rods, and additionally the silhouette of the oak is supported by systems of ropes keeping it upright.
