High Gate in Lidzbark WarmiĆski
General Information
The High Gate (also called the Water Gate, Latin: "Porta Alta") is the only town gate of medieval Lidzbark WarmiĆski preserved to this day. It constitutes one of the most recognizable monuments of the town and an important element of the Gothic defensive layout. The gate fulfilled military, control, and representative functions, and today constitutes a valuable object of Warmian defensive architecture as well as a landmark in the historic urban structure of the town.
Location / Geographical Setting
The High Gate is located in the western part of the historic Old Town, on the former road leading to Orneta and Olsztyn. It is situated on the former circuit of the town walls, above a now non-existent section of the moat. Its location marked the main communication axis leading to the castle of the Warmian bishops; the address is: 1 Wysokiej Bramy Street.
History
Formerly, three gates led into the town; at present one of them has been preserved, or rather its foregate. This structure, called by the inhabitants the High Gate, was built in the Late Gothic style in the second half of the fourteenth century. The gate arose during the intensive expansion of the town fortifications, conducted simultaneously with the erection of the episcopal castle. It was built as an element of the system of defensive walls with bastions and moats. In 1530, the foregate was raised by one storey. It fulfilled the function of a guardhouse, a place for collecting customs duties, and control of trade. It was one of the most important defensive points of the town. During the wars with Sweden in the first half of the seventeenth century and the Swedish Deluge (1655-1660), the structure suffered partial damage, but remained within the defensive structure. In the following century, a partial decline in military significance occurred in connection with the decline of fortification systems. From that time, the High Gate functioned chiefly as a communication structure. When in the nineteenth century the town walls and part of the fortifications were liquidated, the adjoining defensive elements were demolished. The High Gate was preserved as an independent structure and was revitalized in the Neo-Gothic spirit. From 1868 until the First World War, a court arrest was housed in it. The gate survived the Second World War without major damage. After the war, it was renovated and conserved many times; among other things, selected decorative elements were recreated. Today it constitutes an element of the tourist Gothic Castles Route and a landmark in the urban space.
Architecture / Architecture and Spatial Layout
The High Gate is a Gothic, five-storey gate tower built of brick, based on the plan of a narrow rectangle, with a characteristic high and slender body. It is an example of Warmian Gothic â a local variety of brick architecture. The gate possesses several storeys, originally accessible only from within the fortifications. The lower passage runs through the gate on the northâsouth axis.
On both sides it has semicircular bastions, connected with one another by the main gate body. The façade of the building on the outer side is decorated on the walls of the highest storey with a frieze of arches made of moulded brick, entwining the crown of the walls in a zigzag pattern. There are also four so-called blind recesses (a kind of blocked window) and four shields. The structure on the town side is somewhat more modest. Other architectural features include: a pointed-arch passage with preserved Gothic details; a high, slender silhouette fulfilling a dominant role in the panorama of the town; traces of defensive elements: arrow slits, a passage adapted to be closed with a portcullis; a stepped northern gable (a characteristic feature of many Warmian Gothic buildings). The monument is admirable in terms of its dimensions and equals the largest objects of this type in Poland. In its architecture, it resembles the gate in Frombork.
