Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Marwałd
General Information
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Roman Catholic parish church belonging to the Grunwald deanery in the Archdiocese of Warmia. Its origins date back to the second half of the fourteenth century. Erected in the Gothic style, it was rebuilt and renovated in subsequent centuries.
Location / Geographical Setting
The church is situated by road no. 537 leading to Lubawa; the parish address is Marwałd 27.
History
The church in Marwałd most probably already existed at the end of the fifteenth century, because it was confirmed in the fief privilege of 1470. During the Reformation, it was taken over by Protestants and remained in their hands until the end of the Second World War. In the sixteenth century, 10 villages and landed estates belonged to the parish in Marwałd (among them Dylewo, Jagodziny, Nowa Wieś, Pląchwy, Stare Miasto, and Tułodziad).
A great loss for the village and the church was the raid in 1657 by Tatar troops who, as allies of the forces of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, fought against the Prussian duke Frederick William (1620-1688). The destruction was visible many years later as well. In the year 1700, as many as 11 łans of land lying fallow and 20 overgrown with forest were recorded. In the years 1657–1713, the parish in Marwałd, devastated by the Tatars, was served by the pastor from Dąbrówno. The church itself was rebuilt only at the end of the seventeenth century (according to the local chronicle, in 1694) and again after 1766, when the church was struck by lightning. At that time, the parish priest was Bartłomiej Mrąga, father of Krzysztof Celestyn Mrongovius (1764-1855), later a pastor, teacher in Gdańsk, and advocate of the Polish language, who spent his childhood here. In 1721, the parish in Marwałd was enriched by the filial church in Dylewo, and in the years 1758-1767 by the church in Elgnowo. In 1876, the church was extended on the western side, and in 1905 the western tower and the chancel were erected. After the war, the church was taken back by Catholics. In 1972, the Catholic parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was established, to which the filial church in Elgnowo also belongs.
Architecture / Architecture and Spatial Layout
Architecture and Furnishings of the Church
The church is oriented, built of fieldstone and brick, plastered; single-nave, with a short straight-ended chancel. The entrance is adorned with a three-arched portal, and the Baroque interior is covered by a false barrel vault. The high altar dated 1732 originally fulfilled preaching functions, that is, a pulpit was placed above it (which was typical of the Evangelical denomination). The tower is covered with a helmet with a sphere and spire, with the date 1905. The ceiling in the nave is tripartite: flat beneath the galleries, while in the middle part it takes the form of a false barrel vault.
