Nicolaus Copernicus Monument in Frombork

General Information

The Nicolaus Copernicus Monument—created by Mieczysław Welter—was unveiled in 1973 on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the astronomer’s birth. Made of bronze and set on a granite pedestal, the sculpture depicts a standing figure of the scholar holding a lily of the valley in his hand—a symbol of knowledge and natural interests. The monument constitutes one of the most important symbols of the town and an important tourist landmark.

The Nicolaus Copernicus Monument is located at the foot of Cathedral Hill.

History

The present monument is not the first one dedicated to Copernicus in this place. As early as 1909, an impressive monument to the astronomer was unveiled in Frombork. After the Second World War, however, it was dismantled—in 1948 it was considered a symbol of the Nazi era and removed from the urban space.

The idea of commemorating Copernicus was revived in connection with the 500th anniversary of his birth and the Copernican Year proclaimed by UNESCO. In the nationwide competition initiated in 1971, in which more than 30 sculptors took part, the winner was Mieczysław Welter, the author of, among others, monuments to Fryderyk Chopin in Słupsk and Maria Konopnicka in Września. The new monument was placed on the site of the former Baroque gardens of Canon Krzysztof Żuławski, right by the approach to Cathedral Hill. The monument was given an appropriate spatial setting in the form of a circular square with a radius of 11 m. The construction documentation was prepared by Eng. G. Augustyniak, while the concept for the arrangement of the surroundings was developed by the Warsaw Fine Arts Studios. The ceremonial unveiling of the monument took place on 15 July 1973, on the anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald. The ceremony was attended by the highest representatives of the state authorities, and according to press reports the event gathered around 125 thousand people. A week later, a replica of the Frombork monument was erected in one of the largest urban parks in Mexico, which was meant to emphasize the international dimension of the Copernican celebrations.

Object

The monumental Nicolaus Copernicus Monument was made of bronze. The sculpture presents the astronomer in a simplified, compact form, with a lily of the valley held in his right hand. The statue was placed on a three-meter-high granite pedestal, thanks to which the whole reaches approximately 9 m in height. From the beginning, the sculpture aroused extreme opinions. Critics accused it of heaviness and simplified form, comparing the silhouette to “a block with a small head.” Supporters perceived in it a deliberate reference to Warmian folk sculpture and Prussian stone figures. Today, the monument is one of the most recognizable symbols of Frombork and an important element of the townscape associated with the life and activity of the great astronomer.
